Monthly Gardening Advice

June

  • Pinch back your chrysanthemums for a fuller plant with more blooms.
  • After crape myrtles bloom cut of tip of branch just below the faded blooms and they will bloom again.
  • Trim all the dead flowers off your perennials.
  • You can still prune your formal hedges to keep them shaped as you like.
  • Keep herbs trimmed and fertilized.
  • Fertilize any broadleaf evergreens that have not been fertilized.
  • Watch for insect problems. Especially pay attention to Crape Myrtles and Gardenia.
  • Watch for insect damage on your lawn. Spittle bugs are now a problem on Centipede lawns and chinch bugs in St. Augustine.
  • Great time to plant grass seeds especially centipede. Also sod will root in very quickly now.
  • Continue spraying roses with ferti-lome Liquid Systemic Fungicide every 10-14 days. Read label for instructions on application.
  • Continue monthly feeding of roses with ferti-lome Rose and Flower Food.
  • Finish trimming your azaleas this month.
  • Treat fire ant mounds with Ferti-lome Come and Get It Fire Ant Killer.
  • Feed the birds.
  • Plant container grown trees and shrubs. Pay closer attention to watering needs.
  • Continue your fertilization of annuals with ferti-lome Bedding Plant Food at 4-6 week intervals.
  • Add SoilMoist to pots. It is a great product that will absorb water and release it as needed.
